what is your friend using for litter??? if she's using the pine
pellets, that might be what is the cause of the allergy symptoms.
allergy to conifers is pretty common. hardwood pellets can also
cause problems if you're allergic to the hard woods that make up
the pellets - some woods like maple are also fairly common allergy
triggers.

plain newspaper sheets or the yesterday's news pellets would be the
alternate to the wood pellets.

what about dust?? ferrets get under/behind things easily and it could
be the dust on their fur that's the issue.
