Hi Helen
You are *not* being paranoid at all! According to a PETA pamphlet I read
several years ago, General Motors use to use pigs and *ferrets* in "crash
tests"! I'm sure that ferrets must be used in some medical experimentation
and there are many creeps out there who collect pets from persons looking
for "a good home" for their cats and dogs (and I suspect ferrets may fall
into this too) which they then turn around and sell (at some pretty hefty
prices!) these pets to labs! Healthy, loving horses are often bought at
auction and sold "by the pound" to slaughter houses to be sent to Europe
for consumption (Horse meat is in high demand for human consumption there).
Cruelty abounds in this world, and anyone who is looking for "free ferrets"
or free any animal would certainly make me suspicious. The only info I'd
give such a person is the phone number to animal control or the local PD!
Trust those little bells in you r head!
