Hi Suzanne and anyone that need it, there is a hold that will make a
ferret release its grip, we use it to make ferrets let go of rabbits
they have caught.
 
Hold the ferret around the neck from the rear (head facing away from you)
and apply pressure to the top of the head behind the eyes with your
forefingers.  It is easier if you see it demonstrated by a person used to
using it.  You have to apply a fair amount of pressure and the ferrets
usually release instantly, it is much easier than trying to force their
jaws open.
