Good for you for going to the shelter to get your ferret!  The group here in
the Seattle area was very good on the phone and answered all my questions
and a number that I hadn't thought of yet.  They gave me information to
think about *before* I showed up and fell in love with some fur ball or
other.  This is definately the correct way to go about making such an
important decision.  Good luck!
