great post!
i had a few people give me that same crap when i went away to university
and had to find a place that would let me have pets.  honestly, here in
Toronto, Ontario, Canada it was not hard at all!  i wish more people would
try hard to find places that allow pets; they are out there and they are
cheap if they'd just take the time to look!
 
To Jenna and her parents: try checking out prices for apartments off campus
to let you keep your ferret- here they are actually a lot cheaper than
living in a dorm if you can find a friend or two to share with.  there are
bulletin boards and services at most campuses to help you find roommates
off campus too.  a dorm room at my college works out to about $450 a month
and you do not get a stove or a proper kitchen so it costs more than normal
to eat if you live there.  my old apartment was $900 a month for three
bedrooms and a nice living room and kitchen- and access to a back yard!
that worked out to $300 a month plus $80 a month for a transit pass.  saved
me $70 a month and i had a lot more space and privacy than in a dorm- and
it was much safer and nicer too; no one got in fights or had loud parties
that kept me awake into the wee hours of the morning and it was in a
beautiful italian neighbourhood with tree lined streets rather than on
campus.

i bet this rescue is pretty busy.  people are even less logical about
buying cute little fluffy dogs than they are about buying ferrets....
