Are snakes afraid of ferrets?  Not sure.  It depends on what movies they've
been watching.  Also, it depends on if they've been pets of the California
Fish and Game Fowl...I mean...uh...Fish and Game Department.  In either
case, the answer could well be "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."
However, the only way to find out would be to leave some powdered ferret
presents on the steps and see what happens.  Snakes CAN smell...they do
this through their tongue.  The "taste" the air and surrounding objects
(the air, mostly) and analyze the chemical make-up of what they smell.
That is the reason you want to powder the presents, so that the snake can
get a really good "sniff".  If this doesn't work, get a canvas bag (the bag
that attached to most lawn mowers with side discharge would work fine),
capture the snake (or have the ferrets to it for you...or maybe another
person), place it in the bag, twist the bag several times to close it,
then tie the twisted area with a small rope, then take a wonderfully
invigorating drive through the country (of Spain, Italy, Carjackistan,
what-have-you) until you locate a place with a small stream and little or
no people.  Stop the vehicle.  Get out of the vehicle, with the
snake-in-the-bag.  Walk a moderate distance from the vehicle.  Untie rope.
Grasping the bottom of the bag, tip the bag upside down and dump bewildered
snaker on the ground.  Run back to vehicle.  Get in.  Return to your home.
Play with your fur snakes and tell them all about the brave deed you did.
Don't forget to write to the snaker from time to time to let him know how
things are in the neighborhood.
