1. I believe ADV started, in theory, as a mutated strain of the Mink
virus that came about here in the USA due to the practices of mink
farmers keeping ferrets too.

No vaccine even available yet, but if I were you I would keep an eye out
for it. Wouldn't know unless it was looked for.

Not a "huge" problem here, but can be. That is why all the fuss is being
made about prevention and research. Many can tell you it only takes one.

2. Hmm, interesting point of view. But nail cutting is basic care, and
not everyone has a steady hand, or a steady ferret. I think I will worry
more about those who leave the ferrets outside in the extreme temps, or
don't ever bring them to the vet, or leave them caged 24/7. There are so
many more cases of abuse and neglect of animals here, that I think an
accidental nail getting cut too short is like putting too much pepper in
the soup. No big deal. Humans can learn fast, and will rarely make the
mistake again, and ferrets are forgiving.

Now, try cutting a Rottweilers nails at 90lbs, and moving, and nails are
thick black through and through, so no quick to see. I learned to do it,
and compared to that a ferret was a piece of cake. Still I have cut close
to the quick, and got a scolding.
