September 25th, 1999, at 1 p.m., Salt Lake City will hold its first Ferret
Certification Class. Admission is free.

This class will be required by the new animal ordinance for all new Ferret
owners to go through before they can register their Ferrets. It is in the
works to require it before a Ferret can be purchased, but that is still
being worked out with the County Attorney.

This is not another way for the government to regulate our lives, but it
is a way to help our Ferrets from ending up in the hands of uncaring and
unqualified people who think Ferrets are just another pet they can purchase
and stick in a cage or abandone when they grow tired of them.

I personally wrote the class with the intention to warn unsuspecting people
of the special requirements that will be expected of them by their ferret.
The possibility of exspensive vet visits and surguries. Finally, the
legal ramifications if they abuse or mistreat their animal. No longer will
ferrets be aloud to be killed by ignorant neighbors, but the Ferret Parent
who is found negligent in allowing their Ferret to escape. Can be held
responsible. The same will be going for dogs, cats and other pets.

It has been a long and hard fight to get our Ferrets legalized and
protected (10 day quarantine in all biting cases of undocumented Ferrets,
10 home quarantine for vaccinated Ferrets).

Our organization hopes that with better Ferret education we will be able to
close our shelter or atleast not have to worry as much anymore.

Rick
