Ok, now I'm confused.  This seems to be what EVERYONE has been saying
contrary to Ed's position for a week-- don't jump to conclusions based on
one case.  One reason I'm not sure about the 'death-wail' hypothesis is that
the human ear isn't that great compared to that of a dog, cat, or horse.
 
I don't presume that I hear things as well as my ferrets do; can't they
discern sounds better than humans?  *I* don't know why ferrets react the way
they do to squeaky toys/babies.  I haven't seen any responses that claim
they know either.  IMHO, the big problem folks had with the original post
was the apparent blanket-statement that Ed KNEW that reason all ferrets
showed obsessive interest in squeaky items was the predatory urge masked by
a thin veneer of domestication.  That's how I read the intial post and
that's why I was uncomfortable with the post; not for what it suggested, but
for what it apparently concluded as FACT.
