Rich, "exotic" is used two different ways -- to mean a wild pet (which
seems to be what the book is covering) or alternatively to mean an
unusual pet. Ferrets, hamsters, mice, and the rest of the exotics you
mentioned are treated as in the unusual category for the U.S. though
they all have long histories of domestications.
