Chris--
Ben and Jerry's is LOADED with fat and dairy.  I am assuming it's the
general lactose-intolerance that caused the initial diarrhea.
 
About futons--
I have three ferrets and a futon on a frame.  Not a lick of trouble in almost
3 years!  After they play out of their cage all evening I pull up the edge
of my futon mattress and always find the group sleeping in the same corner.!
