Chris and Mike,

Funny you should ask about the chip behind the ear thing. When AVID
came last year, they specifically mentioned that in ferrets they put the chip
behind the ear instead of between the shoulder blades as in cats and dogs,
because they found that when ferrets play they ten to grab each other rather
roughly between the shoulder blades. And I remember thinking `But they drag
each other around by their *ears*'. I neglected for some silly reason to
ask, though. They're coming on November 5th, and although I won't be there,
I'm sure I could get a classmate to ask for me. I should think that the
theory is probably that a chip behind the ear is pretty close to the tympanic
bulla (lump of skull behind ear) and therefore difficult to grab. Ferrets
tend to grab skin behind that, closer to the neck, or the ear itself. I
don't think the chip would be in any danger at any rate, or the companies
docs wouldn't have specifically decided to move it there. But I'll
definitely try to get some clarification on that next weekend.
