It's easy to safely dispose of syringes (as any diabetic can tell you).
Some pharmacies will *give* you a sharps disposal carton, or they are for
sale in many pharmacies...however with two insulin using diabetics in the
household, hubby and I just use an old bleach bottle.
 
Don't break off the tips (they can become foot hazards and ferret hazards it
they fly away), just put the entire syringe into the sharps disposal/bleach
bottle.
 
When full, duct tape it safely closed and take it to the pharmacy or a
hospital .
 
If using a bleach bottle, mark it Medical Waste/Hazardous/Sharps.  They will
get rid of it safely for you.
 
Your local garbage hauler is not equipped to deal with medical waste...
please do them a favor by not scaring the s*it out of them if a syringe
happens to poke.
 
Although there are many more diabetics than AIDS carriers, thats the first
fear anyone poked with a stray needle thinks.  elle in oregon
