Our Sidney had a huge spleen removed at 6.5 years of age.  That was in
addition to having his stomach opened up to remove two rubber disks.  He
looked like hell the first couple days after surgery, but he recovered
quickly and uneventfully.  He went on to live another year, dying of
unrelated causes.  As with any surgery, there are always risks.
