Ferret flooring has always been a challenging issue for us. Our last house
in Texas had pale beige wall-to-wall pile carpeting. I had to buy a steam
cleaner to keep it looking that way after lots of ferret traffic. When my
crew got the greenies, the carpeting was really a spectacular kaleidoscope
of mottled blotches! We had to give away a large carpeting allowance when
we sold the house.
I was delighted in Florida that the new house was largely covered with
ceramic tile - it would be so much easier to clean than carpet! Was I ever
wrong. Ferret poop sticks to the tile like superglue, and the urine runs
down all the grout lines and "travels" all over the floor. The grout
absorbs the urine too. We finally got an Envirosteamer, cleaned the whole
floor, and sealed the grout, which has helped some.
In the area of the house where there is a wood plank floor, the problem is
awful. We have been loaned some pieces of Pergo flooring to put in the
corners to see how it does. So far, I am a big fan of Pergo! All the
ferret messes "bead up" and wipe easily off. No seams, no staining,
nothing! We'll continue our test, and if all goes well, we are going to
start replacing flooring in our house with Pergo (a wood laminate where the
wood cells are shot through with polyurethane or some such sealer). Does
anyone else have experience with Pergo?
