Pasteur, our last rescue (out of 13 which came to Ferret Wise - thanks Kim
for letting us help him and the others) from the Loving Friends seizure was
assisted to sleep by shelter vet Dr Winnie yesterday-- he was no longer
eating, and could not hold his back end up. His blood sugar was below 35.
We had been hoping his blood levels would pick up-- the past few months
we were able to motivate the liver a little and build the white count a
little-- But our attempts to help him further failed. The determination
was made after the pred caused him to bleed out. We knew with his immune
system taxed and liver poor, kidneys taxed from lack of water previously --
this was a possibility-- but there was no chance of surgery.
Eventually we said goodbye -- and he looked absolutely beautiful when he
left us -- he was , in the end solid pudgy -- the way he always was meant
to be not a rack of bones with skin as when he arrived. He also and spent
2 weeks running and playing with the rest of the kids- after a 3 month
rehabilitation - I really hate what happened to him- and know that the
lesson most likely was not learned at Loving Friends This makes my heart
break. For Pasteur I know at least he learned there are folks who care, he
actually gave kisses last week, and for a few short weeks he had that spark
that ferret should have. I will miss him greatly here at Ferret Wise.
For those few who have posted in support of Loving Friends the condition of
the animals was criminal. There is no excuse for death by starvation at a
shelte5r-- no excuse for lack of clean water -- and there is definately NO
excuse for leaving deceased ferrets in cages with live ones-- this was the
worst case scenario in sheltering. I am astounded that NJ laws allow them
to continue operating. I suggest that tax paying NJ citizens start a
letter campaign to the officials who licensure the shelters. Public
opinion weighs heavy on elected officials!
Say a prayer for all shelter ferrets and blessings - that there will be no
more scenarios like that at Loving Friends last summer.
