Hi everyone,

Yesterday, I called Performance Foods to ask them about the expiration
date for the huge amount of Totally Ferret that I have left. I spoke
with Jeff, who had heard about the ferret who died from eating bad food.
He or someone in the office might be a member of the FML.

Unfortunately, I do not have my original bag since we had a mouse who
chewed through the bottom. Since then, we keep the TF in a Rubbermaid
container. They changed the format of the expiration date, so I couldn't
tell whether mine was from the old batch or the new batch.

Performance Foods' official word on the expiration date was something to
the effect of guaranteeing that the food will be good until the expiration
date printed on the bag. This was for keeping the food at normal
temperatures with the top of the bag rolled down. The expiration date is
actually conservative, since the food will not spoil until three or five
months after the expiration date. Since I didn't have the sack, he
couldn't tell me for sure.

Above all, Jeff said to smell the food and notice the ferret's reaction to
it. A change in smell or if they suddenly stop eating might indicate that
the food is spoiled. Just contact them and they'll be happy to replace it.

If anyone else contacts them, you might want to suggest that they put that
info on the webpage..
