Today's Boston Globe (Monday) had a largish article about weasels - see
the front page of the Health/ Science section. Wild weasels, not ferrets,
but it describes them ferret-like - "downright sweet," it calls them, and
quotes someone who says, "Holding one in your hand is like holding
electricity." Fierce & curious. It also mentions a book called "The
Natural History of Weasels & Stoats" by Carolyn King of New Zealand. It
was quite a delightful article, and was particularly of interest to us
because George has been seeing a weasel at work - he's building a house
in a wooded location, & a few times now he & a co-worker have had the
privelege of watching a wild weasel wandering by... All white, dressed in
its winter coat, it was more noticeable than it should have been in our
snowless Massachusetts woods.
Anecdote: I decided that my ferret Ramone wanted to learn to walk on a
leash, now that he's calmed down a little, so we were out for a scamper
the other day. A few cars slowed down to gawk, & when one stopped, I
picked up the ferret. The driver leaned out & said, "What's that you
have there? A little monkey?"
Happy new year to all,
sharin
