Hello all,
Well there is another obscure danger with the Midwest cage and probably
with others as well. Last night I heard this horrible screaming, coming
from my babies room. I went in and found my little Shelby hanging by 2
toes on her left front paw. ALL of my furkids are climbers. Anyway, on
the corner of the cage where the 2 sides meet, there is a gap just big
enough for an unsuspecting fuzzy to get caught in. I was so frantic seeing
Shelby hanging there by 2 toes, as I ran into the room. She was slinging
her little body every which way, trying to get loose, but her toes had
slid down so far in that crack she couldn't get loose. She calmed down
immediately when she heard my voice. I held her up to take her body weight
off the 2 toes. I had a hard time trying to spread the corner open enough
to get her loose. When I finally did, I found she had broken the 2 toes.
I'm just so sick this has happened to my little Shelby. On her foot the
2 toes that are broken, would be our index and middle fingers. The joint
that is at the base of our 2 fingers that join to the hand, is where she
has the break. The 2 toes are so limp, they can bend each way. Imagine
your 2 fingers bending all the way back and all the way under. It just
sickens me. There isn't any way to set broken toes on people, much less my
baby girl. She is alert and shows no signs of pain. But she won't put any
weight on that foot. I tried to wrap the foot with the stretchable tape
the doctors use, but she only chews until she has gotten it off. I feel so
bad. Now I have to come up with something to wrap around the corners of
all my cages, I'm so paranoid it will happen again. Anyone with ideas,
short of welding the corners, please give me an idea to fix the cages with
something, that the kids won't chew on.

Hugs and good thoughts to all sick and healthy furkids.
