hi lisa,
i to have a ferret that gets a swollen face from time to time.  his face
looks like a great big strawberry which usually also accompanies projectile
vomiting and diarrhea.  i to couldn't figure out why this would happen,
leaving it to be possibly some sort of allergic reaction.  the best i can
figure my little ferret is allergic to aresol sprays and nail polish.  it
seemed to be an hour or so after either of these that an allergic reaction
would take place but not every time, go figure?  now that we are aware of
this and that those are possibly why, it hasn't happened in quite some
time.  he usually needed dyphenhydramine to help with the swelling and
cemetidine for the vomiting.
 
maybe your little guy is allergic to these things too...hope this helps
