Well, "sighting" may be too strong a word, but you science fiction fans of
Poul Anderson may find his "The Fleet of Stars" interesting.  In the first
section he describes a society far in the future.  One of his descriptions
of the clothing and customs includes:
 
"The custom of wearing swords appeared to have ended -- maybe duels were
rare nowadays- but pet ferrets or tiny metamorphic hawks sat on many a
shoulder."
 
Humm, I guess the future can't be all that bad.  <G>
