There are no good scientific studies on the cause(s) of adrenal disease in
ferrets. Bob Church did an informal study some months ago. (BIG how can

The most commonly suspected agents are: early neutering, genetic defect,
kibbled diet, unnatural lighting patterns. Some of those you can guard
against, but there are no guarantees.
I hope you do decide to get another ferret, and that it lives a long and
happy life.
