Christmas tree water (rusty bowl)

How do I keep the ferrets from drinking the water in the Christmas tree
stand?  The stand is made of steel and has been used for several years, so
the bottom is rusty.  If I wrap a plastic or cotton sheet over the stand,
the ferrets will just end up making things worse trying to get to the
water.  I'm sure drinking water from a rusty bowl is not good for them, so
I'd appreciate any suggestions!
