(Excerpt from "The Electronic Ferret Comes of Age" [Rough Draft]
THE FIDONET/UUCP GATEWAY
If you are not now privy to an internet account, but you have access
to a BBS that is on the Fido Network, do not despair. You can still have the
Ferret Mailing List delivered to you on that System. Fidonet Sysops usually
provide NETMAIL services to those who contribute monetarily (subscribe) to
their system. (Long distance rates being what they are, this is not an
unreasonable arrangement.)
Here's how to subscribe to FML (and also exchange e-mail with your friends on
internet and other major services) from the confines of Fidonet.
1. Log on to your local Fidonet BBS.
2. Access the Netmail section of the BBS.
3. Select the command to SEND a message. (On some systems this is
either (S)end, (L)eave, or (P)ost.)
4. In response to the TO: query, type UUCP (PRESS ENTER)
5. In response to the NET/NODE: query, type the address of the
Fido/UUCP gateway nearest your BBS. In some cases the software will insert
one
that the sysop has chosen. If so, leave it as is. if not, you may try 1:1/31
or 1:231/510 .
6. Type whatever you want in response to the SUBJECT: query, If you
are subscribing to FML, type SUBSCRIBE.
7. On the first line following subject, you should type the internet
address of the party you're sending to.
For subscriptions to the FML it's
[log in to unmask] [for subscription requests]
and
[log in to unmask] [for article submissions]
or
[log in to unmask] [for anonymous postings to FML]
To send mail to the author (Roger McMillian) from Fido (or other
nets)
the address is
[log in to unmask]
____________
FML ARCHIVES
^^^^^^^^^^^^
Back Issues of the Ferret Mailing List are kept in an archive system
called LISTSERV. You can request up to 25 back issues in a 12-hour period
from
LISTSERV. The procedure is as follows...
Repeat steps 1-5 above,
6. Type FILE REQUESTS in response to the SUBJECT: query.
7. On the first line following subject, type
[log in to unmask]
8. use the GET command to request the issues you want by number,
e.g...
GET FERRET 475
GET FERRET 476
GET FERRET 477
and so on. Be certain that your spelling is correct and that your
editor
places only one get command per line. If the spelling is wrong, the server
won't send you that issue. As mentioned earlier, you may request up to 25
issues at a time.
They will be delivered via netmail, usually within 24 hours.
The Origin site for Ferret Forum also keeps archives of the FML in
it's Files section. They are archived in ZIPped packets of 25 and the file
names conform to the following convention.
The first two letters of the file name are "FL".
The next six spaces are digits "NNNnnn" where "NNN" is the beginning
issue and "nnn" is the ending issue.
The filetype is "ZIP".
The first file in the series is "FL002025.ZIP" (issue 001 was not
available when the files were archived. It will be available as
"FL001001.ZIP") The next file is FL026050.ZIP. Files following this will be
NNN+25 and nnn+25 ad infinitum. (Hope that makes sense.)
To get these files delivered to your Fido BBS, ask your sysop for
instructions on making file requests. The Fido address for the origin site is
1:115/622. If your local BBS doe not have file request capabilities, sen me
E-Mail and list the files you wish to have sent via net-mail.Chicago Syslink
is PC Pursuit-able, so you may also call direct and log onto the BBS.
If you decide to visit, you will find the files in the Ferret Forum
Echo section. To get there from the main menu, type S, then 2, then 1. You
will then see the menu for reading messages and downloading files. Time is
limited to non-subscribers, so download first and, if time permits, read
messages later. The Ferret Forum Echomail Conference may be accessed from
certain other Fidonet boards as well. See "Ferret Forum" for the access
numbers nearest you.
