Hello FMLers,
My 8-9 year old Koto has been on pedia-pred for almost 2 1/2 years to help
treat her insulinoma. In the last several months, she has lost almost all
of her hair and I noticed that her skin was so terribly dry and wondered
what I could do to help make her more comfortable. First I gently gave her
a bath with the mild ferret shampoo I use. It is a hypo-allergenic formula
obtained from my vet's office. THen I began to give her very gentle
massages. I reasoned that just like people she might benefit from the
increased blood flow that massage brings about. I take her up after she
has had her evening dose of med (she thinks it is a treat because she gets
it in Boost/water, with brewer's yeast sprinkles-she loves it!!). I take
the time to gently rub her head and ears, neck, and then long, slow back
and forth strokes on her back and rump areas. She adores the feeling and I
think we both adore the time shared together.
I have noticed that her skin is not as dry anymore and just looks and feels
healthier. Koto frequently does not feel well now days and has pain too.
I know the massages help her to feel a bit better by her more relaxed
muscles after the massage. She will usually curl up on my chest for a
while after her massages, and we will share quiet time together. I am glad
for something I can do for her besides just giving pain meds and treats.
Try it--you and your little one will both love it!!
