This afternoon I put 1 1/2 inch carpet tape around the bottom of the ferret
cage.  It may be too soon to tell, but it seems to be keeping ants away.
They don't seem to want to walk over the tape, as it is quite sticky.
 
The tape is clear, comes in a roll for about $4.00, and is produced by 3M
with the same red plaid patch on the package as scotch tape.  Since the
liner is white the tape doesn't appear clear when purchased.
 
If it turns out the carpet tape isn't really helping, I'll post again and
let everyone know.
