Hi, Sara,
There are steps you can take which will greatly reduce any chance of ferret
odor being detectable. Talk to your landlord and see if he or she is
willing to work with you, so long as you are making a clear effort to
eliminate the problem *quickly*. This way you might just be able to keep
your fuzzies and your apartment. Putting the ferrets up for adoption
should be an absolute last resort.
Here is what we did when we had the same problem with one of our rather
surly neighbors. It satisfied everyone concerned, and we have *seven*
ferrets.
-we started changing the litter box twice a day instead of once, and scrub
it regularly
-we use Arm & Hammer Pet Fresh on the carpet, and vacuum daily
-we throw their bedding (old towels) into the washing machine every couple
of days, with hammocks and sleep sacks getting washed once a week
-we use Four Paws Ferret Deodorizing Spray whenever we can really smell
them while we're holding them. It works out to every three or four days.
-we bathe them once a month. It's not enough to dry out their coats or
their skin (which would cause more odor), but it does get them fresh
smelling. We use Kenk Ferret Gleem Shampoo, but there are many other
brands which are equally good
-we clean and scrub the cage at least once a week
-we check their toys and tunnels, and soak and wash them as needed
With seven liberty trained ferrets, we haven't had a complaint in months.
It's a lot of work, but our fuzzies are worth it.
By the way, we would have moved before we would have ever given up a single
ferret.
Good luck!
Caity
