Garlic can cause Heinz body anemia in cats and dogs (and maybe ferrets,
too ...). I have an article on that from the JAVMA (Journal of the
American Veterinary Medical Association), if anyone wants to see it.
(Please email my home address for that: [log in to unmask]).

The Heinz body anemia problem exists in garlic taken *internally*, though.
I think Megan was talking exclusively about applying it externally .. which
is why I was concerned about botulism. (There have been some cases -
although not *that* many - of people getting botulism from home garlic
infusions). Many thanks to Megan for her thorough answer to my concern!
