Hi, All!
Sorry that this is the second post you'll see from me in today's edition.
We just got back from the regular vet's, who took 3 x-rays of Dodger. Her
conclusion is that he has pneumonia. One of his lungs is completely filled
with fluid.
Yet another case for "stay as far away from the fuzzbutts as you can while
you have a cold"! My daughter and I were fighting what turned out to be a
fairly mild one last week, but it hit the Dodge despite efforts to limit
our contact with the babies.
The vet taught me how to give sub-q fluids (not too intimidating since I
used to work as a phlebotomist) and sent us home with that, more a/d and
an antibiotic (Cefa-Drops).
When we got home I thought that Dodger might like to be paid a visit by
some of the crew, so I let baby RockStar sniff him. What a mistake!!
Dodger went stiff, his mouth formed an "O" and he started panting heavily!
I thought that I was going to lose him right then and there... I started
thinking about how to do CPR on a ferret! I held him close, petting him
and talking soothingly until he calmed down. Apparently it was too much
excitement for his one lung to handle!
Even now if I open the carrier door and it surprises him, he goes into
the same mode. I'm afraid that this diagnosis may be too late and that
his pneumonia might be too progressed.
Isn't it just incredible how quickly their condition can deteriorate???
Everyone please send good thoughts Dodge's way... please pray if it's
something you do... I think he's at a critical point and I believe that we
have the power to influence (not control) these things to a certain degree.
