We haven't seen the lack of motility that you describe.  We usually treat
the diarrhea with Pepto Bismal or Kaopectate, along with Amoxicillin and
Carafate.  For vomiting, we give heavy peach syrup (from canned peaches)
which seems to settle their stomach so that we can give the other meds.
 
From the symptoms and the barium, I'd have gone with the surgery too.
