We would never let the Em have anything but water except for one
drink--froth!
Everybody "knows" that ferrets shouldn't drink milk because a)cold
milk can upset their tums b)heated milk can burn them c)all milk can
give them "the runs"--and everybody also knows they love milk. . .
We found a solution. We have an espresso machine with a frother
attachment. Every morning I make myself a cafe latte and froth the
milk in a mug. After I pour the milk into my coffeecup there are
lovely milk-suds left on the sides of the milk mug.
I let the frothy mug cool while I drink my latte, and then I let
Emmett out of his cage. He heads right for the froth mug and licks
all the milk-suds off its sides.
There are not a lot of suds because I scrape most of them into my
latte--but there's enough left to make the Em think he is getting a
real treat! I figure he is probably actually getting the equivalent
of 1/4 teaspoon of milk at the most--a small quantity, just the right
temperature (not hot, not cold)--and he looks forward to it each
morning! Occasionally he'll have a softer-than-usual stool, but it's
not as if he were drinking milk--he's just licking milk-suds.
We have been doing this since fall when we bought the espresso
machine. It is now part of the regular a.m. routine. If you're going
to try this at home please start with just a teensy-tiny bit of froth,
perhaps just on your fingertip, 'cause I don't want to be flamed if your
ferret gets "the runs," okay? Thanks!
