Well, here's one you might not have thought of:  try fixing a litter box to
the door! :)  Get a litter box long enough to do the job, punch some holes
in one side, get some large-headed wood screws and some washers large
enough to fit over the threads, but smaller than the screw heads, then
drive the screws through the holes in the little box and into the door.
Don't put too much litter in the box...enough to do the job, without making
the box heavy.  Be sure you don't open the door too far, or you might
damage the box.
 
This way, they can still "use the box", while allowing you to safely open
and close the door to the room without "smearing" their reputations! :)
