I was raised Kosher, and I was told that gelatin comes from the hooves of
pigs' feet and therefore, as a pork by-product, is not kosher (tref).  There
is a Kosher (vegetarian) jello substitute called Ko-jel.  I don't know what
it's made from, but I believe it's seaweed.
