Because one of my sons is very sensitive to chemical repellents, we started
using a homemade one - and it seems to work for the fuzzies, too.

I mix several drops each of rosemary and lavender essential oil in about a
cup of Everclear (or vodka, or grain alcohol, 100-proof or better), shake
well for several minutes, then mix that in another half-cup or so of hot
water and put in a mister bottle. I spray it on us (kids and furkids) when
we're out, and on our screens at home to help against the "noseeums". We
haven't had problems with 'skeeter bites, and the lavender helps repel
fleas. (It smells good, too!)

If you don't like the rosemary scent (it's kinda strong) geranium essential
oil is supposed to be even better at repelling insects, and smells like
perfume if it's mixed properly. (Unfortunately, it seems my husband is
allergic - which is something you need to watch for when using plant
extracts.)
