Okay, okay, I can't resists any longer.. I must confess!! I was going to
keep it a secret, but Rob's question about earthworms and my own burning
desire to 'fess up is making it impossible.
Where do I start? I'll blame it all on Bob Church. :-) When he mentioned
he gave his ferrets freeze-dried crickets for snacks, I hit upon a lovely
idea that incorporated the novelty of moving targets (ahem, like goldfish)
with a more humane approach: live crickets. My boyfriend Craig feeds them
to his anole lizard, so we just picked up an extra dozen the next time we
were in the pet store. (You all know where this is going....)
Back at the house, we excitedly opened the bag and let out about 7 crickets
into the plug-stopped bathtub. We had visions of war-dancing ferrets and
carnage. But when we actually put the ferrets into the tub, they were very
curious about the moving funny things, but weren't motivated to devour. I'm
ashamed to say that, mostly, they just worried the poor crickets with their
mouths, although Baxter did me proud and eventually ate every one that he
saw. It was substantially less fun than we envisioned. So, in case you've
been suddenly struck with a desire to try this at home, don't bother.
That's my story. Does this mean I'll get flamed, now? If it helps, a
cricket is about the only live thing I could see feeding my ferrets, unless
it was even smaller- like bugs. Hey... does anyone know if ferrets like to
eat spiders? I'd love to train them to attack any that show up in my
bathroom! :-)
