Hi,
Im writing this after averting a disaster this evening. During playtime
tonite, all the active, healthy and social ferrets were out about in the
house, as usual. I was in their room, cleaning cages. Nothing unusual
whatsoever. Somehow, Pogo, one of our shelter boys, figured out how to open
the mail slot on our front door, and Daisy followed him. They got out the
screen door and were off on (what i can only imagine as) a grand ferret
adventure. I, on the otherhand, was oblivious to their "fun". When the
time came to put them back into their cages, I noticed they were missing. I
searched the house, with no results, and opened the back door, finding Pogo
gardening in our tomato plants. I was now frantic. I knew somehow they had
escaped, but did not know how. I called for Daisy, and got the flashlight,
as it was getting dark. Thank god I had taught them to come when I whistle!
I found Daisy about five minutes later, running towards me at the front
door.

PLEASE, if you have a mail slot on your door, even thought it opens with a
push from the outside, TAPE IT SHUT! After living here for almost a year,
and having them play out of their cages daily, this is the first time this
has happened. Im sure this is how they escaped, since after I recovered
both of them, I put them back into the house and they immediately went to
the slot and began digging at it. Also, the screen door has a nice hole in
the bottom of it. Im very thankful that the whole situation ended the way
it did, safely for everyone, and can empathize with anyone who has ever lost
a ferret. What an awful feeling!

We're going to permanently seal the mail slot after tonites fiasco, and get
a mailbox.
