Hi everyone!
Just wanted to let everyone know we had another vaccine reaction here -- The
vaccine that was administered was FERVAC-D. The rescue turned in late
Saturday, was not vaccinated until a vets office was open as per our policy.
Good Karma, as it turns out.
We premedicate all of our vaccine recipients with pediatric benadryl, 1cc 30
by mouth, 30 minutes prior to vaccination. Vaccine was administered
subcutaneously, in the shoulder.Reaction began 25 minutes after
administered. There is a vet clinic (not our usual vet) less than 1/2 mile
away. Based on his reactions, I decided to go there. Reactions were:
whimpering, facial swelling, increased color to the footpads, ears, eyes,
mouth and site of injection, a lump at the site of injection, vomiting,
diarrhea and lethargy. Poor Rascal was immediately seen and administered a
steroid. He seems to be fine now, but is on "vomit watch".
Folks! Always stay at the vets at least 30 minutes! I stayed for an hour
(until they closed) watching him. He is fine now, but a big decision looms
in his future, as he was more than 2 years overdue for a distemper booster
(makes ya wonder if he didnt reaction 3 years ago, and they just didnt tell
me and thats why he was overdue).
We will be reporting this to United Vaccine and the USDA. The vet said that
he had never seen such a reaction before in a ferret. Poor little guy!
