>A friend called me Fri afternoon to ask what baby ferts look like, he said

Having had a chance to see a wild mink caught in our window well up close
and sans teeth, I know they do look extremely similar to ferrets. In fact,
our first thought was that it was a ferret caught. After careful
examination of pics in numerous wildlife guides and the frantically jumping
mink, we determined she was a mink. (We ended up dropping a couple of small
cardboard boxes into the well so she could climb out on her own and we
wouldn't get bit.)
She was a very gorgeous animal. A glossy all chocolate coat with the
exception of a white chin patch. Definately a gorgeous animal and in what
appeared to be peak condition.
From the proximity of water (as it sounds) to where you found the babies
and their coloring, it might be possible you have a mink baby on your
hands. I'm no wildlife expert, but it might be something you wish to check
on further.
People who do wildlife rehab might be able to help with any needs that
she might have that would be different then a ferret. If I recall correctly,
Marshall's ferret food has fish in it and was originally tailored for minks.
It might be a good food to use for her.
I hope this information helps you. Emailed to Sandy and the FML.
