I have seen this "statistic" quoted in numerous places, and when I checked
with one of them, they clarified that ferrets were the third most popular
mammal pet (i.e. excluding things like fish and birds), after cats and dogs.
They stated that their source was the humane society.  I intended to check
up on this, but have been really swamped in the last couple of weeks.  I
will let you know once I have gotten in touch with them and gotten a
confirmation or denial.
