I am responding to a posting from Katie about shelter ferrets necessarily
being problem ferrets. Nothing could be further from the truth. I
volunteer at the Ferret Nook Shelter. There are many many very young, very
nice ferrets relinquished to the shelter. Many people buy them from pet
stores because ferrets are "so cute." They know nothing about the
responsibility and the pet stores - for the most part - do not educate them.
Ferrets are turned in to shelters for many reasons - and yes - there are
some sick ferrets - adrenal problems - but by and far - it is because people
buy them not knowing what they are getting or of lack of education. And the
wee ones that are surrendered to shelters are by far the lucky ones, versus
being ignored , starved and/or abused. My youngest, Felix, was around six
months old - had been purchased by a college kid that didn't realize how
spirited ferrets are. He relinquished Felix to the shelter - and I have a
wonderful spirited sweet ferret boy.
