Hi Tina,
A couple of things you can try are:
1) Always leave a little poop in the box.
2) Try to reduce the amount of litter to the minimum required to serve
   the purpose.
3) Change litter type(last resort)
 
Tina, you did not mention what kind of litter you are using or the box
type so these are just some general hints that often work.  Good luck.
