To my surprise, last week I  received this notice in the mail:

Marine Resources, Special Licenses Unit, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12233-4752
                                         NOTICE
This notice concerns your ferret license which will expire soon.  On August
20, 1997 the Governor [George Pataki] signed legislation that repeals the
law that requires a person to obtain a license to posses, breed or sell
ferrets in New York State.
 
Therefore, it is not necessary for you to renew your ferret license.
A ferret license is not required to posses, breed or sell ferrets in New
York State.
