Yesterday my husband and I went to the Louisville Zoo to see the BFFs! We
live in Cincinatti and it's about 90 minute drive for us.
I think there were 2 on display. Being nocturnal, they were asleep in a
pile of dried grass. They were right there by the window, but because of
the grass it was difficult to make out what you were seeing. We spent quite
a bit of time there hoping they'd awaken. I got soo excited at every stir!
Finally we decided to try again later. So we walked outside and saw one of
the zoo workers walking along with a domestic ferret in a carrier. We
stopped and talked and he noticed us looking at the BFF's before. I
mentioned we were here to see the BFFs. Anyway, it turns out there was an
older female ferret behind the scenes. One of the workers took us in a
"personnel only" area and there was a wooden box with a tiny 8 year old
female inside. She shivered the entire time. ( the zoo worker said she was
a very shy girl ) She would only come out far enough for us to see her face
and neck. We were there for about 5 minutes when the ferret retreated into
her hole for good. She was soooo beautiful! I had no idea how gorgeous
they are! Pictures somehow do not do them justice. It was such a treat,
and I have a new appreciation for the BFFs.
They have a captive breeding program in Louisville and the workers said that
they released more ferrets recently but couldn't give too many details on
the status of the program. I would like to hear from anyone who has more
info on the status of BFF captive breeding program!
Anyone who has the chance to see the BFF in person - do it!
