Even if you do not want to take the chance of giving your own distemper
shots, you can still buy your own vaccines from Jeffers (1-800-JEFFERS). I
think they will sell individual doses of Galaxy-D, but if not, a box of ten
is about $20. Some people have observed that there are fewer bad reactions
to Galaxy-D. Your vet may not stock it because it is distemper only and
they prefer the combos for dogs. If your vet is at all open-minded, I don't
see why s/he wouldn't agree to use the vaccine you bring in and reduce the
cost of your visit a little. Personally, I can't afford to take all ten for
distemper shots right now, and they all are due. Instead, my vet has agreed
that if I give the vaccs in the morning and let him know when I am doing it,
he will be prepared to take any emergency that arises. Fortunately, he is
only 5 mins from my house. I will be pre-treating with pediatric benedryl,
hoping that this will buy me any time I would need to get to the vet.
Anyway, I think most vets would allow you to supply the vaccine so that you
feel confident that your ferret is getting the least reaction-causing one.
