My ferret loves cheese and milk (or any sort of cereal soaked in milk). I
am aware that this can cause "the runs" in many animals, so we give it to
her only in small quanitities as a treat, and not every day, and we watch
her droppings to make sure they stay solid, or she doesn't get any for quite
a while (she gets mad at this :).
She is about 3 years old, and has had no problems due to this. In fact, we
recently changed her food (the old was temporarily unavailable), and she got
constipated. Our solution? We gave her about 2 teaspoons of milk...she
loved it, and the next day she was fine.
Now, I don't recommend this solution to all problems, but we knew what had
caused the problem, and my husband was with her all night and all morning
the next day to make sure everything was OK.
So, I think, like people, animals have different reactions to foods, and
although many are probably "lactose-intolerant", those of us who do feed
dairy products to our fuzzies are not necessarily bad parents, or doing
something unhealthy for them.
