From 1989 through 1996, there have been 94 confirmed cases of rabies in the
state of Ohio, about a dozen a year. In Lorain County, where I live, the
last confirmed case through last Thursday was a rabid bat in 1993.

For the state, from 1990 through 1996, the following rabid species were
found:
61 bats
5 skunks
2 raccoons (this year raccoons are an increasing problem in eastern counties)
2 cats
4 horses
1 cow
2 foxes

From 1980 through 1994, 438 ferrets were testing by the state (about 30 per
year). None were found rabid.

These statistics are from Bill Allison of the Lorain County Health
Department (total cases and ferrets tested) and Flemming Mosley of the
Lorain City Health Department (species counts).
