Re: Dick B's post--'Our place is so "ferretproof" I really wasn't too
worried (I know, I know - how about "ferret resistant"? ferret-almost safe?
ferret best we've been able to do...)'

I took Prince Charming and Merlin to visit their cousins Nellie and Sophie
on Easter weekend. Since the 2 petite ladies don't like their large
obnoxious male cousins, Prince Ch. and Merlin stayed in the (finished)
basement which has seen numerous ferret residents and visitors over the past
few years.

To make a long story short--when I came downstairs in the morning, I saw a
very dirty Merlin (usually white), a partition on the floor that normally
covers an open place in the wall, and no Prince Charming. Conclusion:
Merlin and Prince Charming had gone into the wall, Merlin had emerged
voluntarily, Prince Ch. was still somewhere in the wall.

Easter Sunday was spent combing through the house and attic, banging on all
the walls, and squeaking a particularly loud french bread squeaky toy in the
hopes of rousing an obviously sleeping Prince Charming. To no avail. Not
even any noise indicating where he might be.

I put up signs outside and combed the sidewalks of Brooklyn trying to look
inconspicuous while squeaking the French bread toy (which, incidentally,
attracted the attention of all neighborhood cats, dogs, humans, etc.)

Prince Charming emerged about 8 hours later (though he could have been in
the wall longer, not sure when he went in). He was no less the worse for
wear, wondering what all the fuss was about. He spent the next week trying
to get back in the wall. No small feat for a ferret who has some hind leg
problems, but who obviously mananged to jump over a 'ferretproof' barrier.
Took a few years off my life.

On a related note, does anyone know the author of a French story called
'Passe-Muraille' about a man who could walk through walls (in the end he
gets stuck). I read it in high school and haven't been able to find it
again.
