Warm olive oil - the plain old cooking stuff - is an old home remedy that my
momma always used for my sister's ear aches.  This remedy's been around for
a long time, so it probably is the same olive oil used for cooking if no
other ingredients are listed.
 
I prefer to wash their ears w/the rest of their parts when I bath them.  My
guys HATE the Q-tip thing!  & they told me they didn't want the other frits
calling them *salad head.*
