Hello Judy,

I am avid subscriber to the FML and saw your post regarding ferret desktop
patterns and your interest in our photographs. First of all, let me say
that anytime ferret fans look to our photographs with interest we're
appreciative and consider it a compliment. However, all of our images are
copyrighted and cannot be used for any purposes, commercial or otherwise,
other than those we license. At present, we are not licensing the use of
our images for any commercial or resale purposes.

I'm sure you are aware that time and money are integral parts of the
creation and execution of any image. The Federal Copyright laws are
designed to protect the originator of all artwork including film,
photography, music, paintings, etc. from unauthorized use of their property
by someone other than the owner (usually the originator). In fact, there
have been several court cases in the where an illustrator has copied a
photograph for resale and the photographer has successfully sued for
copyright violation.

My intention by posting this information is to inform you about the serious
nature of the copyright laws, and also protect you from possible harm.
Companies whose copyrights are violated will usually litigate to protect
their business interests, and violators can pay hefty fines, plus attorneys
fees.

Sounds like you're on the right track by asking permission of those whose
images you want to use. Be sure you get, and save, that permission in
writing and include their copyright information on those images should they
request that from you.

I hope this information helps avoid possible problems for you. Best of luck
on your project.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Carley
