Thanks BIG for letting us vent our frustration at a mindless system that
hurts us by hurting our fur children.
A letter follows that I sent the Governor John Engler:
>Governor John Engler,
>
>Because you "do not have the authority to intervene" a family pet died
>today. Bob Jacobs children will never be able to think of MI the same ever
>again as it killed their beloved family pet.
>
>I don't live in MI, and until I see change in the way ferrets are handled
>(more like persecuted) in your state I wouldn't even dream of living there.
>I will personally boycott anything coming from your state. I will not
>purchase anything made in or coming from MI in any form. I will not
>vacation in your state nor drive through your state.
>
>I have a small ferret rescue and know the wonderful nature of these loving,
>yes I said loving, pets. I feel the whole thing was handled badly by your
>overzealous county animal control officials, who truly seem to not know very
>much about ferrets, though apparently they think they do. I challenge you
>to check into how many ferrets have been killed and tested in your state and
>how many were positive for rabies, you might find it very enlightening! I
>hope you will look into the matter and make your own judgements regarding
>the outcome and that you can look into your children's or grandchildren's
>faces without twinges of guilt about the Jacobs' children who are now filled
>with the sorrow of losing a loved "member" of their family.
>
>When your state changes it policies on ferrets I will consider changing my
>opinion of your state. I would like a reply, and please not a form letter
>reply like you told the news media that you received from the many people
>who were begging for your intervention. This is not a form letter and it
>is written personally by me, I would expect the same consideration from
>you, a personal note, not rhetoric from an aide. Your side of it as it
>was.
>
>Rather you are ready for it or not, this has had far reaching effects on
>your state. The world was watching.
>
> Sincerely,
> Vicky James
I'll let you all know if I get a reply.
